I am really glad that 1/12 of world population is using you

I.              Introduction
Ancient Greece is the most interesting and controversial civilization that was once flourished around the east of Mediterranean Sea. It’s about 6000 B.C. to 146 B.C. about 5000 years old. During those 5000 years of time, there are many periods; Neolithic, Early Bronze, Minoan, Mycenaean, The Dark Ages, Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic. There were many countries and thousands of wars happened. In this report, I will suggest the reasons why the certain countries whether Greek or not and I will also suggest 4 standards that will be helpful to decide such things.

II.             Countries
In ancient Greece, there were hundreds of city-states, poleis, therefore it’s unwise to describe all those poleis. Thus I will describe 2 big city-states that represent ancient Greece; Athens and Sparta. Athens was the largest city in Greece, and controlled a region called Attica. Between the many mountains were fertile valleys, with many farms. Athens became rich because Attica also had valuable sources of silver, lead and marble. Athens also had the biggest navy in Greece.
Athens was a beautiful and busy city. People came to the city from all over Greece, and from other countries, to study and to trade. The city's most famous building was the temple called the Parthenon. It stood on a rocky hill called the Acropolis. Inside the Parthenon stood a statue of the city's protector-goddess Athena.
While Athens was trying democracy as a form of government, its rival Sparta had two kings. One king might stay at home, while the other was away fighting battles. Fighting battles was what the Spartans did best. Greeks said that in a battle one Spartan was worth several other men.
The Spartans spent so much time training for battle that they would have starved without slaves called helots. The helots worked on the Spartans' farms. They grew the food for the Spartan soldiers and their families.
Athens was democratic operation but in contrast, in Sparta’s case, it’s kind of mixed. Even it had two kings, the kings didn’t have all the power. Sparta has Parliament called Gerousia. Even the king made a decision and if people in Gerousia disagree, the decision can’t be made. By doing this, it stopped power to go to only one man. This democratic poleis system is the typical point that decides whether the country is Greek or not. 

III.            Cultures
The culture of Ancient Greece is too big and large, so I thought it’s unwise to list all those Greek culture. So things that I did were compare the culture of Greek countries and find the similarities. First they use same language. Second they believe in same gods. They believe in 12 gods of Olympus which’s Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Hera, Ares, Athena, Apollo, Aphrodite, Hermes, Artemis and Hephaestus. However they don’t pray to all those 12 gods. The regions or countries god is different. For example, Athenians pray to Athena, the goddess of war. So we can say those ancient Greek temples are biased. Still there is exceptional case. Apollo temple in Delphi isn’t. It allows everyone to ask their questions and predict their future. 

IV.            War
The point that must be remembered is that the country that fought against the Greek union is not Greek. For example, Persia’s not Greek. The facts of two wars, Trojan and Persian, will be described briefly.

IV.1. Trojan War
History described that Trojan War incited because Helena and Paris. However I disagree with his idea. The main food source of Greeks was bread and they required wheat to bake it. As many land of Greeks were rocky, so they had to import wheat. The place where they imported wheat was Ukraine, west of Russia. The fastest way is to sail across the Aegean Sea, go through Hellespont then go through the Sea of Marmara and finally sail through the Black sea. However right next to Hellespont there was Troy. So Trojan asked for tributes. Greek merchants had to give them tributes. In those days there weren’t any money so things they did were trading. Therefore Greek gave some of their goods. In this process of paying Greek goods to Trojans, they happened to share their cultures. However later they fed up with paying tributes so they decided to conquer Troy.

         
IV.2. Persian War
The reason for Persia’s attack was that when Persia’s fighting with Ionian city states rebellion, Athens helped them. The king Darius, the king of Persia that time, got really angry and planned to conquer Greece, but first they conquered Thrace, the north of Greek. After few years, Persia’s attack incited. Ancient Greek city states united together and protest. Because even only Athenians helped, the other Greek poleis thought that Persian army was not coming for only Athens. They first attacked Attica and Eretria. Then they were defeated by Athens in Marathon. Athens used various tactics. According Herodotus, Persia lost 6400 men and in contrast, Athens lost only 192. Then Darius died and his son Xerxes prepared for the war but they spend 10 years preparing and Greek nations could prepare it. 

V.             Greeks?
V.1. What makes Sparta Greek?
l   Sort of democratic operation. They had kind of parliamentary system that controls Sparta. It stopped power to go to only one man.
l   Used Greek language.
l   Same Greek Religion; 12 gods of Olympus.
l   Played a great role in defending Balkan from foreign invasion

l  Perfect democratic operation

VI.1. Comparison
 I will compare my view of Trojans and Persians and historians view of Trojans and Persians. First of all Herodotus viewed Persians as complete foreigners and I completely agree with his idea because as I stated above, Persia’s completely different culture. All the things they did were invading Balkan. Secondly, Homer also viewed Trojans as complete foreigner but this time, I disagree with this. The reason is as I explained before, Trojans had similar cultures with Greeks and they had also same religion. Therefore, it’s wrong to consider Trojans as complete foreigners.

 VI.2. My Opinion
The standards that I made to decide whether the country is Greek or not are 4 things. Language, religion, common enemy and city-state. If any country is missing one of those we cannot say that they are Greek. For example, Macedonia is not city state and Macedonia was common enemy of Greek city-states. Trojan is kind of Greek, because in the process of paying tributes, the Greek cultures kind of mixed with Trojan culture but Troy was also enemy of Greek city-states. There aren’t only countries that are Greek and countries that is not Greek. Not like black and white. There are grey zones too. And I think that Macedonia and Troy are in those grey parts. In Persia’s case it’s not Greek, because Persia does not fit in those 4 standards I suggested above.

Highrise Project- from Montreal

     HIGHRISE is a documentarical project that introduce many people from many regions with different cultures and I am presenting Benoitwho lives in Montreal. He happened to live in 3 different cultures; French, English and Arabiab. As you know Montreal is in Quebec where many French people live and Canada is English culture and he works in Arabian Restuarant. It is same for me. I have 3 cultures around me. I have Korean, English and Russian cultures around me. In contrast, there are also many dissimilarities.

     Benoit loved cooking since when he was young so he learned french pastry. When he grow up he got the job at the resturant named Cremino as pastry chef. The problem is he doesn't know any Arabic and he has problem communicating with other cooks. This is exactly the same as my life. I couldn't speak any Russian language so I had problem everywhere! The major dissimilaritiy is that Benoit tried to learn Arabic by himself but I didn't even tried to learn Russain.

     Another major similarity is that we both live in 3 different cultures. He happened to live in 3 different cultures; French, English and Arabiab. Same here, as I live in Russia I have to contact with Russian cultures automatically, still I live among Korean society in Russia and as I am Korean I have Korean cultures. Finally, I attend British International School so I have English cultures. As Benoit said if we have these kind of various cultures surrounding you, you will recieve disadvantages and advantages at the same time. For example, communication problem.

      Unlike those other guys introduced in HIGHRISE, he's quiet rich and live in proper house. He sees a house across the highway. Across highway, next to his house there is destroyed house. It was very rich building but since when rat started to destroy the place, it became empty. However, the region that I live was very rich and there weren't any poor people. I see many things out of my window. I see skycrappers, cars and etc. but I don't see any destroyed house that's difference.

     The most crucial thing that I learned from this was that like the building next to Benoit's house, we can be destroyed. Even if you are perfect now, you can change and in my opinion, the way how you are being changed is the most important.

Anyway, most of people in my school was very kind. The picture on the top right corner I am with my friend named Luka. He's Croatian and he's one of best friend. He's so rich that he has every iPhone versions.  I miss my friends.

S.A.T Style Reflective Essay - "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring"

     "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring" was the movie that made me to think about the significanty of life. Even I watched only the first and short part of this movie but I daresay that I have learned many things.

     The young monk started tie a thread around the creatures body and attach that into rock just for fun and his master found this out. The young monk did this to fish, frog and snake. His master was really angry with his awful action of trating living things. His master did the same thing to the young monk when he was sleeping. The master wanted his student to know how it feels like to be tied with rope and rock. He wanted him to realize that it is painful and unpleasnat. The young monk was ordered by his master to find the three creatures and untie them all. The speech that he made was really remarkable. He said "If one of those creatures is dead, you will have the heavy rock in your heart forever." The young monk went off, and unfortunately fish and snake were dead and only frog was alive. Fish and snake were all found dead in tragic scene. When the young monk found out that the snake was also dead, he started to regret and cry.

     I have the same experience like the young monk. When I was age of 5 to 6, I loved killing ants. However, after my Dad saw this, he asked me to think about in the ants' point of view. After that, I started to treat living creatures carefully. After that, like the young monk, I realized that every living creature are valueable and none of those creatures are born in vain.

     In my opinion, the young monk will learn more about in the continueing movie, and I hope I do learn movie in my life.

Writing Chain: Toilet By Class 25

     I does make sense and I liked the way it turned out either. I have never expected things like that. First it was just explaining about toilet, but the last writer write the whole thing as a story and I really liked that. So if I were the last writer, I would have dvelop the idea more.

     A toilet is a place where you complain about your unsatisfactory life and forgive other people. Life is the most unfair thing, but you can blame that to someone in your sectioned place. As you step in a toilet, lock the door, combersome noise from the world disappear instantly.

     However, public toilet may stinks a lot. So you must always go in your own bathroom, or check check whether the public toilet is stink or not. After you take a seat in a toilet, you can talk about people who ypu hate or play phone games. Make sure that you know who is seating next to you because that person might be the one you were talking about. One more tip when you are going to bathroom is to bring tissue. If you forget to bring it, you can be in a disasterous situation. Just don't forget to bring your provisions which include tissue.

     This is enough for some tips, and I want to talk about timming which you need to aware of while you are using bathroom. When you have a visitor at your place, it's very rude to spend a lot of time in your bathroom. A minute or 2 is adequate. You have make your bathroom clean, because the visitor may use it too.

     "The teacher threw down the essay in disgust. No, it wasn't even worthy of  the name 'essay'. Who had wrote this? " She looked at the name at the top of the page. 'Jennifer Daviduck'. Of course she thought, and sighed who else?
She was tired of having 'little talks' with Jennifer. She looked morose and sorry every time, but every time she would do it again. Her obsession with toilets was impossible stop. She sighed again. She would have to do something. Soon.

     Note for reader: The writer of this essay(?)-that is, all except for one-are very sorry for creatig such a horrid piece of writing. This excercise was chain writing, and a boy(whose name I will not reveal) started the essay in such a way. Again we are really sorry. I, the final writer, found it impossible to continue and change it at the end.

     I will say this essay was very creative. As you see, we realise how much can we pull things out from small thing like toilet/bathroom. I started this essay and I confess that I overstated things to much. However, I hope readers understand that I just want to know how other people will react. There are some grammar nad spelling mistakes but they were only few of them, so it was generally OK.
